Trainee Configuration Engineer

We are currently recruiting for a Trainee Configuration Engineer to join us at Allan Webb Ltd working from the Babcock site at Lakeside complex in Portsmouth.  Close to one of the largest naval bases in Western Europe, we are a key strategic partner to our customers; the Ministry of Defence and the Royal Navy, helping to ensure the Royal Navy goes to sea safely by supporting them in the UK and around the world.

We deliver complex ship and submarine sustainment programmes and apply our core strengths of technology and expertise to sustain critical and complex assets to help maintain national security.

As a Trainee Configuration Engineer, you’ll learn the function of the Master Record Data Centre and the requirements for managing and maintaining the Surface Ship Definition Database. This database contains millions of records relating to Royal Navy and Royal Fleet Auxiliary ships, and the service ensures the capture of all necessary data pertaining to fitted equipment, and that the Surface Ship Definition Database is kept relevant and easily accessible.

There will be an in-depth training programme where you will learn how to interpret and extract technical data from drawings, specifications, and other technical publications and compare to data held in the Surface Ship Definition Database, updating this as required. The role will also include development activities to understand the Ministry of Defence Surface Ship stakeholder community, their requirements and how they can both provide for and utilise the Configuration Status Accounting Service provision.

In addition to this on-the-job training, you will also be working towards gaining an industry recognised level 3 Engineering qualification.   There will also be exciting opportunities to visit both Royal Navy and Royal Fleet Auxiliary ships at variety of locations throughout the UK.

Required Skills/Experience:

  • A self-motivated and driven individual as you will join our diverse team of Engineers
  • A strong team player, with an ability to communicate confidently and professionally
  • Conversant with PC use and standard IT packages including the Microsoft Office suite
  • Some engineering job experience is desirable, but an interest in the engineering sector, naval ships and maritime support activities is essential
  • GCSE (or equivalent) Grade C in Mathematics and English are essential

Applicants should hold or have the ability to obtain UK security clearance.
