Creating Technical Publications for Tata Steel

Tata Steel approached Allan Webb to refresh, standardise and modernise its existing training material, allowing for the timely delivery of technical-based training for site operators.

The Challenges

The steelworks in Port Talbot and Llanwern span over 10 different production areas, each containing a vast amount of complex systems that enable an incredibly high output of steel products. The training material already in place was inconsistent, so new operators were given varying degrees of training depending on the area they had joined.

Our Solution

We sent technical authors to Tata Steel’s plants in Port Talbot and Llanwern to work closely with their team to understand the processes and safety precautions required to correctly operate the systems.

Each system was analysed to form the basis of an operator training document, utilising our best-practice experience. Documents were then authored by our technical documentation team in Stonehouse before being reviewed and signed off by the client. We did this in stages, allowing Tata Steel to approve work more quickly and have materials in place for each part of the plant.

Benefits / Outcomes

Tata Steel now has a standardised set of technical documents across its Port Talbot and Llanwern plants, so its trainers have a robust set of reference guides to work from. The documents contain the vital information required to operate safely within the workplace and are completed to all necessary standards. All instructions are written in an accessible manner that is easy for both newcomers and veterans to understand.
