Dr Darkin delivered a presentation on power generation technology for the future surface combatant and Mark Copp, Technical Director for Allan Webb, joined him to discuss the challenges of being both proactive and reactive when it comes to electrical obsolescence with regards to a recent successfully completed joint project.
Obsolescence in long life projects and equipment is inevitable, and electrical items, with shorter lifespans, often carry particularly high risk. Unforeseen obsolescence issues can happen quickly, often having significant impacts including loss of equipment capability and significant increase in through life support costs. Proactive obsolescence management, including monitoring and resolution of obsolescence risk to high risk parts, is essential to effectively supporting equipment. Tailoring an obsolescence management strategy to proactively monitor high-risk parts and adopt a reactive strategy where appropriate allows for maximum availability and optimum cost.
